Compost bins to be sold at one-day event hosted by Kane County Recycles and U of I Master Gardeners
Soil Saver Compost Bins will be $50 each at this one-day event being hosted by Kane County Recycles and the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners.

Time: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Cost: $50 each. (Retail price is $90-$100, regular price at UIE is $65)
"Our intent is to help as many people as possible to recycle food scraps and landscape waste at home," said Jennifer Jarland, Kane County Recycling Program Coordinator. "Backyard composting keeps food scraps out of the landfill, thereby reducing methane release from landfills, and converts the scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, which can be applied to your garden beds to help your veggies and flowers flourish."
Kane County Recycles will be selling the Soil Saver bins at the low-cost price of $50 on Sept. 19, and there will be Master Gardeners available to talk to attendees and share "how-to" advice.
The University of Illinois Extension is located at 535 S. Randall Rd, St. Charles. The brick building is on the east side of Randall Road, just north of Route 38 and south of Route 64, in front of the Kane County Fairgrounds. If you are traveling northbound, there is a left-hand turn lane into the lot.

APA Illinois Conference
Annual state planning conference to feature training workshops, full spectrum of sessions and a distinguished keynote
The 2017 State Conference of the Illinois Chapter of the American Planning Association is just around the corner offering a host of learning opportunities for planning practitioners. In addition to an array of Preliminary Program session topics and training activities, the conference will feature 8 mobile workshops to experience Naperville and the surrounding suburbs.  John Norquist will give the honorary keynote address. As the former Mayor of Milwaukee and President & CEO of the Congress for the New Urbanism, John has long been an advocate for walkable urban developments and equitable urban design. He is the author of The Wealth of Cities, and has taught courses in urban policy and urban planning at the University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and at Marquette University.

Smart Growth in the Midwest
Webinar features an overview of planning policies and practice in Midwestern states
Is "Smart Growth" a relevant term in the Midwest? How has the concept influenced planning and development in the America's heartland, and how do current practices compare to notions of smart growth as established by the American Planning Association and the experience of planners in other parts of the country? This webinar will explore these questions through the lens of consultant planners working in rural and urban communities across Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
In this Smart Growth Network webinar, Jason Valerius, chair of the Planning Community of Practice at MSA Professional Services in Madison, Wis., and co-author of Becoming an Urban Planner: A Guide to Careers in Planning and Urban Design, and his colleagues will describe what they see in their work across the Midwest and reflect on the impact of state-led funding and legislation to encourage "smart" local planning. Eligible for 1.5 AICP CM Credits.

Solar Plan Review Course
Course instructs on how to evaluate and complete permit applications for solar installation plans

- Would you like to know more about what aspects of a PV system need the most focus, either due to safety concerns or common installation errors?
The Illinois Fire Inspectors Association is sponsoring an interactive course designed to provide a practical process for consistent plan review, with an emphasis on how to catch the most frequent installation errors. Taught by a national expert in solar plan review, the course will walk you through the review of a complete permit plan application.
After completing this course, you will be able to evaluate a complete solar permit package to ensure it is compliant with building, fire, and electrical codes. The course costs $95, which includes lunch, breaks and materials.
